As the director of 911 in Smith County I met Brenda when she dispatched for ETEMS in Tyler. She was there during the early days of cell phone service and worked closely with me as we resolved issues on a national level.
One night she took a call from a man having a heart attack. He had stopped his car on the side of a road unfamiliar to her. She eventually determined it was a call misrouted by a imperfect cellular system. The man in cardiac distress was on a road near Monroe, Louisiana! Never one to abandon a caller she contacted telephone information, found the ambulance system for Monroe, then called them and dispatched an ambulance in another state, all the while keeping him on the phone! She saved his life, one of many in her career.
I worked with Brenda for many years, including teaching a class at the annual fire school at Texas A&M for several years. The people of East Texas have lost a friend and a guardian.
